Senior Editor:

  • Oversees and assists with production groups, questions, leadership edits, etc.
  • Responsible for final proofreads for all articles before publication
  • “Second in command”: managing emails, interfacing with professors 

Required:

  • Extensive editing experience
  • Ability to work with a variety of topics and authors
  • Good communication, organized, proactive

Preferred:

  • Previous experience with Grey Matters (at least 2 quarters)
  • Familiarity with primary literature

Materials:

Editing Coordinator: 

  • The editing coordinator reviews all editor applications and creates the production groups for each quarter. They edit and proofread articles, and assist with the development and presentation of workshops.

Required:

  • Extensive editing experience
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of topics and authors
  • Familiarity with both technical and non-technical writing
  • Good communication, especially for coordinating student editors and discussing edits
  • Excellent management and organizational skills
  • Able to distinguish between strong and weak articles
  • Proactive

Preferred:

  • Experience reading and understanding primary literature
  • Past experience with Grey Matters (at least two quarters)

Production Manager: 

  • The production manager edits and proofreads articles, writes article ‘blurbs’ for the journal’s table of contents, and completes other tasks as needed.

  • Strong editing and writing skills

  • Familiarity with both technical and non-technical writing
  • Excellent management and organizational skills
  • Able to distinguish between strong and weak articles
  • Proactive

Preferred:

  • Experience reading and understanding primary literature
  • Familiarly with scientific or technical writing
  • Experience communicating complex topics to general audiences
  • Interest in helping with other Grey Matters projects outside of journal production

Outreach Coordinator:

  • Writes alt-text captions for visual features online
  • Implement accessibility initiatives for all events and meetings
  • Expand the reach and diversity of Grey Matters to diverse audiences

Required skills:

  • Strong editing and writing skills
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of topics and writing styles
  • Organized and proactive 
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

Preferred skills:

  • Experience writing alt-text
  • Literate in disability advocacy language

Finance Director:

  • Oversees Grey Matters’ various bank accounts
  • Generates ideas for pursuing funding (sponsorship, outreach, donations)
  • In charge of interfacing with departments to work out funding
  • Acts as the liaison to the printing service (invoices, deadlines, print #)

Required skills:

  • Willingness to reach out to PIs and researchers
  • Professional email communication with donors/departments
  • Can reliably manage multiple funding types 

Preferred skills:

  • Past experience with budgeting or finances

Marketing Manager: 

  • The marketing manager oversees the Grey Matters store, helps manage the Grey Matters budgeting, and pursues funding opportunities and fundraisers in line with the Grey Matters mission.

Required:

  • Excitement about the Grey Matters mission
  • Ideas for how to create and market Grey Matters merchandise
  • Ideas for how to grow the Grey Matters store and online marketing presence
  • Strong work ethic and organizational experience

Preferred:

  • Past experience with fundraisers and/or managing orders
  • Past budget or financial experience

Social Media/Web Manager:

  • The website manager is in charge of maintaining and updating the Grey Matters website, oversees the online release of articles and art each quarter, and helps increase the journal’s online presence

Required:

  • Familiarity with website design (WordPress)
  • Generate ideas about expanding Grey Matters’ online presence
  • Organized
  • Good communication skills

Preferred:

  • Ability to analyze neuroscience articles at a basic level

Art Director:

  • Recruits and oversees artists
  • Manages illustrations and provides feedback on drafts
  • Digitally edits artwork for final print
  • Creates artwork for the journal and other events

Required:

  • Baseline knowledge of Photoshop
  • Ability to make simple edits to ready artwork for print
  • Good communication skills, flexibility
  • Experience with multiple mediums

Preferred:

  • Past experience with Grey Matters
  • Skill in other Adobe programs

Design Director: 

  • The design director is responsible for recruiting designers and overseeing their work laying out articles, including providing feedback and putting together the final journal layout. They work with the rest of the leadership team to design various materials, such as event posters or flyers for potential members. They also coordinate staff portraits for each change of leadership. The design director is expected to pick up extra work as needed to keep the journal’s layout on schedule.

Required:

  • Serious experience with Adobe InDesign
  • Knowledge and curiosity about best practices for typesetting and layout design
  • Good communication skills
  • Flexibility

Preferred:

  • Skills in other Adobe programs
  • Pursuing a future career in the design industry
  • Past experience with Grey Matters

Events Coordinator:

  • The events coordinator oversees all events and membership for Grey Matters, organizes our annual event (An Evening with Neuroscience), and generates ideas for how to create a neuroscience community.

Required:

  • Strong leadership skills
  • Able to coordinate a team of students for event organizing
  • Able to present and support the Grey Matters mission

Preferred:

  • Past experience with event planning and organizing
  • Past experience with Grey Matters (EWN committee, journal production)
